Using the mall as a setting, write a short
story using the following words:
Giraffe,
Cup,
Ambiguous,
Sly,
Latte
Cara sat sipping her latte on the brown wire bench in the middle of
the mall. Large puffy clouds passed
overhead in the broad skylights, sending shadow and light over the tile
aisles.
“I wannnnnnt it. You’re a bad mommy!” The voice screeched from in front of her,
followed by loud successive screams. Looking
up into the store-front of the toy store in front of her, she saw the source of
the commotion. The small tyrant was
embattled in a great tug of war between a large purple stuffed giraffe and a
rather rotund woman in a navy suit, one shirttail untucked. Strands of brown escaping the woman's loose bun, with
a huff she sent them flying from her face.
“No toys, you don’t need it.”
The struggle went
on until the woman finally pulled her credit card from her purse and rang it
through. The little victor strode away
along with his mother, purple stuffy under one arm.
After another sip from her cup, Cara stood and readied to return to
the till of the fashionable clothing store to the left. Another day, another dollar.
This was her church, the church of greenbacks. Set to worship once again the ever-ambiguous
almighty dollar. Outside the glass, she
watched the patrons pass by sending coins to their saints in exchange for
brightly coloured bags and many years of servitude, sly promises of a happier,
healthier you and the feel good of the purchases all to leave them wanting when
the credit card bills arrived.
